LEGISLATION UPDATE PRESSURE REGULATION:

PRESSURE SYSTEMS SAFETY REGULATIONS 2000
The scope of pressure plant requiring Statutory Thorough examination by a competent person together with intervals of inspection are detailed in the following:

a) Compressed Air Systems:-

Normally Minor & / or Intermediate, however, those systems where the vessel is of less than 250 bar litres stored energy are exempt from the requirement to have a written scheme of examination but not from the remaining regulations.

The periodicity is as stated in the Written Scheme of Examination (but these are normally):-

i) Receivers and System
Working examination 12 monthly
Thorough examination 24 monthly

ii) Air / oil seperators
Working examination 12 monthly
Thorough examination 72 monthly

Note: -

However the Competent Person may vary these periodicity's at his discretion's in the light of his findings after a thorough examination and after consultation with the client.

b) Steam at any pressure:-

Normally classified as Minor if indirect fired and or less than 2 bar pressure and classified as intermediate if over this pressure but below 10 megawatts output.

i) Shell type steam & hot water boilers direct fired by Hydro - carbon fuels or electricity

Minor or Intermediate System
Working examination 12 months nominal
Thorough examination 24 months nominal (14 months max.)

ii) Steam receivers
Working examination 12 months nominal
Thorough examination 24 months nominal (26 months max.)

Note: -

However the Competent Person may vary these periodicity's at his discretion's in the light of his findings after a thorough examination and after consultation with the client.

c) Refrigeration:-

Refrigeration systems require a written scheme of examination under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 if the installed running and standby compressors are over 25 kilowatts of power input, below this energy level the system is exempt from the requirements for a written scheme but is not exempt from the other requirements of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 and as work equipment require to PUWER 1998. The periodicity of examination will be as given in the written scheme and would normally be:-

Working examination 12 monthly
Thorough examination 48 monthly

The extent of the examination and any additional tests would be dependent upon which refrigerant fluid was in the system, the operating parameters, the materials used, etc.
